There’s one thing about Lea Salonga which isn’t really much drummed up yet particularly is even more impressive than packing theaters in Broadway or the West End.

And that is being a cool, loving mom.

We are so enthralled with her voice. The world is just so captivated when people see her on stage, but we learn about how she sings lullabies and always at her daughter’s side to encourage, strengthen and inspire, we are mesmerized with how she takes on the biggest role in her life. Truly Nicole Beverly Chien, 11, Lea’s only child with businessman husband Robert Chien is one fortunate kid.

No, there’s no pressure about having to measure up with a Tony Award-winning mom. Lea, with all her snapshots posted on Instagram, seems to let the child be just who she is—enamoring, blissful, and beautiful. And above all, one kid who enjoys every moment being a kid.

Maybe Lea didn’t have that kind of pleasure growing up—having been performing since age 7 when she captivated audiences in the Repertory Philippines production of The King and I in 1978. Surely, not much playtime any kid would enjoy. But her sacrifice indeed made her one of the most admired Filipinos in history—showing to the world how talented and world-class Pinoys are.

But of course, after settling down with Robert in 2004 and giving birth to Nicole in 2006, she truly made it clear how much she would want her bubbly bundle of joy live the life she wants.

You notice that joy in Nicole, how she beams when called and brings out the sunshine by her presence. Happiness is truly all around her, not only with Lea and Robert around, but most especially with her lola Ligaya, who has always been the doting grandparent ever since.

And that filial precious gem called talent? How can Nicole not have it?

She can also sing and dance, and perform on stage, which is very much evident when she sang “Yesterday’s Dream” in Lea’s concert Playlist The Repeat. Though she was giggling and a bit shy, Nicole still wowed the audience similar to how Lea impressed everyone when she was about her age.

Lea also had a duet with Nicole on her birthday celebration on The Voice Philippines the next year and also enamored everyone with their duet of “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing” and “Tomorrow,” Lea’s signature song as a child performer because of her hit portrayal of Annie that stuck on everyone’s minds.

Are we all awed by Lea as that international theater performer and coach on The Voice Philippines? We should be more fascinated by the way she has been a loving and wise life coach to her daughter, who seems to enjoy every minute with her.
