MANILA, Philippines — As part of its continuing commitment to champion healthier lives, Sun Life Financial Philippines kicked off SunPIOLOgy TR10 — a charity sporting event in partnership with its ambassador, actor Piolo Pascual — with the successful second run of Sun Life Cycle PH last November 17 in Bonifacio Global City.

Over a thousand participants took to the streets starting at precisely six o’clock in the morning for the 40-kilometer and 20-kilometer rides. Leading the pack with their top-of-the-line two-wheelers were three-time Tour de France winner Robbie McEwen, Ironman finisher and Sun Life ambassador Matteo Guidicelli, and Piolo himself.

“It always gets better every year. What’s good about Sun Life Cycle PH is that it’s very organized. The motorists also gave way. It’s nice to see that the community is really starting to appreciate the sport,” says Piolo, who finished the 40-km ride with his son Inigo Pascual.

Also present was their fellow Star Magic artist Jake Cuenca. A finisher of the Sunrise Sprint category of the Bellevue 5150 Triathlon in Bohol, Jake finished first in the 20-kilometer ride. “It was just really fun to ride the bike fast with no cars and not a motorcycle in front of me,” he shares.

Matteo, who finished the 40-km ride alongside sister Giorgia and father Gianluca Guidicelli, echoed this sentiment, saying, “It’s nice because Sun Life makes a really safe event that can encourage people start becoming healthy. In Sun Life Cycle PH, everybody comes together, including the celebrities, and it’s not all the time that you get them all together.”

First blind Filipino para-athletes Jerome and Joshua Nelmida also joined the ride using tandem bicycle and ushered by their personal guides. “Although we had to stop for a few times, the race went very well. We feel so happy because many were cheering for us, like they are inspired by the fact that we live a healthy and active lifestyle despite our condition,” said the twins.

Female Star Magic artists were also in attendance. Teen sensations Kisses Delavin, AC Bonifacio, Loren Burgos, and Sarah Carlos were among the fierce ladies who demonstrated their cycling prowess.

Aside from the amateur and experienced cyclists, the event also accommodated younger riders. Cycling enthusiasts aged 6 to 15 years old took part in the Kids Ride, with the option of a 30-minute solo ride or a 30-minute family ride. Meanwhile, kids ages 2 to 3 years old enjoyed a 100-meter Tricycle Ride, while those aged 4 to 5 years old participated in the 500-meter ride.

Having confirmed a possible third run of Sun Life Cycle PH, Sun Life Financial Philippines Chief Marketing Officer Mylene Lopa shed light on the importance of promoting cycling as a sport and a recreation at the forefront of the event. “Biking is one way that we can be healthier and more active,” she said. “At the same time, we can also enjoy quality time with our friends and family while doing healthy activities.”

Sun Life Cycle PH is the first of the three events of the decade-long charity-sporting event SUNPIOLOgy TR10. Upcoming events will be the charity run Sun Life Resolution Run and a friendly match between Sun Lifers and Star Magic artists Sun Vs Stars both happening on January 26.
