Out and proud balladeer Lucas Garcia wins hearts in remarkable Idol Philippines journey

Mary Ann Bardinas July 24,2019 11:00 PM

Being the last-ever auditionee of Idol Philippines, the young balladeer from Lipa City, Batangas proved that he’s definitely not the least after making it to the Top 5. Not only that, his journey in the competition demonstrated as well how far a mother’s unwavering love and support can bring her children towards the realization of their dreams.

Growing up in a broken family, Lucas Garcia had already experienced hardships in life at a very young age. His parents’ separation when he was just seven years old urged him to join singing contests and gigs in order to help his family in their finances, and at the same time, lend a hand to his mom in every sewing job that she does. Aside from developing a cohesive bond with his mom ever since he was a kid, what makes him adore her even more was with how she accepted the real him right from the very start.

Auditions

Bringing with him the inspiration provided by his mom, the proudly and beautifully gay contestant instantly astounded the four judges not only with his eccentric appearance, but with his impressive take on Sam Smith’s “Lay Me Down” as well that truly tugged the hearts of the judges.

Since they all completely appreciated how he confidently put his own flavor to the song and how admirable his voice and personality, he earned the highly coveted four “yes’s” and the golden ticket to Idol City.

Theater Round

As he thrilled the judges with how he nailed his part in their group’s performance of the Sam Smith hit “Stay With Me” during the Theater Round, he proceed to the next level of competition with Kevin Hermogenes, defeating his 4th Dimension groupmates Jap-Jap Talania, and Ali Aguila.
Do-or-Die Round

Together with other five Idol hopefuls, the 20-year-old versatile singer delivered a truly splendid showdown on Mariah Carey’s “My All”, which the judges tagged as the “performance of the night”. Luckily, they still chose him to move on to the next round, along with Lance Busa and Miguel Odron.

Solo Round

The jurors might be impressed with his magnificent interpretation on the Alicia Keys’ hit “If I Ain’t Got You”, but Judge Regine Velasquez-Alcasid had a piece of advice for him: to hold back a bit since he might have the tendency to “oversing” and commit mistake.

Top 12

Moving on to the Live Rounds, in which they were mentored by National Artist for Music Mr. Ryan Cayabyab, Lucas grabbed this opportunity to sing one of his compositions that was also interpreted by his ultimate idol and Idol Philippines judge Regine Velasquez-Alcasid – “Sometime, Somewhere”.

Aside from the fact that he’s been dreaming of singing this in front of a crowd after watching the Asia’s Songbird belt it out in one of her concerts, he also aimed to express his love to her mom through this heartwarming performance.

Top 10

He might had an embarrassing moment during his mentoring session and rehearsals with Yeng Constantino and Erik Santos, but he made sure to keep in mind their advices for him and not to bring that gaffe in his actual performance. Thus, he successfully tugged our hearts with his stirring rendition of the OPM classic “Lupa”.

Top 8

Lucas undeniably has a versatile and powerful vocal prowess, but mentor Morissette Amon noted how he seemed to fall short when it comes to piercing the audiences straight to the heart. So they focused on improving him in that aspect, which he obviously executed very well in singing the modern love song “Tagpuan” as he was able to please its singer and songwriter, Judge Moira Dela Torre.

Top 6

As he aimed to break into the Top 5, the powerful Batangueño balladeer made sure to bring out his best even just on their rehearsals with Mr. Pure Energy Gary Valenciano by astounding him with his rendition of his hit love song “Ikaw Lamang”. He was able to bring this onstage as his mellifluous, emotive interpretation received a standing ovation from the four judges.

Will Lucas be the first out-and-proud champion of Idol Philippines? Don’t dare miss the finale this coming weekend for you to find out!
