If Aleck Bovick had a choice, she would rather be an action star taking down ruthless enemies with one swoop, maybe with a fierce back kick or firing powerful artillery.
But when she started in showbiz in 1999, this Fil-German beauty with her captivating and gorgeous frame was only given one option: become a sexy vixen.
“Ako action talaga gusto ko tapos napasok ako sa sexy kasi ang buhay that time sexy,” Aleck tells Entertainment.ABS-CBN.com in an exclusive interview. And after being that alluring figure gracing a weekly sitcom, Aleck since starred on TV dramas and movies with that tantalizing and sensual image.
She would soon appear on the 2004 afternoon drama Maid in Heaven, and this first Kapamilya teleserye performance made everyone notice her flair in acting. This led to her first TV antagonist role on Ang Panday in 2005 opposite Jericho Rosales and Heart Evangelista as the fiendish Lady Feirrus.
The popularity she earned from those teleserye stints led to her inclusion in the first Celebrity Edition of Pinoy Big Brother in 2006, in which she is well-remembered for shaving her head to donate P100,000 to her chosen charity, and her hair used to make wigs for young cancer patients.
THROWBACK: Ang Panday (2005)
This run as a sexy star took a halt after she gave birth to son Leonne Lancelot with actor-producer Carlo Maceda in 2007. She had since lied low from the limelight, just making occasional guestings on teleseryes.
At this time, she encountered the most difficult phase in her life.
“Ang hirap kasi ‘pag ‘yun ang hilig mo, tapos nahinto ka. Parang lost ka,” Aleck reveals. “Dumarating ka minsan nade-depress ka.”
But when she encountered this rough patch, she knew what she had to do.
“Ang ginagawa ko, gumagawa ako ng ibang bagay na pwede kong pagkabusyhan,” Aleck added. “Example sa mga kids ko, or sa church, ganyan ang ginagawa ko so makakalimot ka for the meantime hanggang magugulat ka na lang biglang ‘yung timing ni Lord, ibibigay sa’yo ‘yung hinihiling mo. Siyempre mabubuhay ka, yes, yes. May trabaho na naman.”
Aleck would soon have a recurring role on the hit 2012 morning drama Be Careful With My Heart that further placed her under the TV casting radar, now landing gripping mother roles.
She would then portray the mom of Joshua Garcia’s character Joel on Nasaan Ka Nang Kailangan Kita in 2015, among other similar roles on ABS-CBN programs.
“I’m very thankful na medyo marami na rin akong nagawa sa ABS(-CBN). Sobrang thankful ako kasi hindi nila ako nakakalimutan na i-lineup,” she said.
Aleck would then guest on FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano from 2016 to 2017 as Cora Ignacio, an ally of Coco Martin’s character Cardo in the latter’s search for vindication and retribution on the top-rating primetime action drama’s second season.
And, after a year, the prominent role of Myrna Bartolome on the phenomenal hit afternoon drama Kadenang Ginto fell on her lap.
“Thankful ako kasi medyo nawala din ako, nagpahinga ako ng one year. Ngayon eto na naman, katulad kay Jessa tinatawag ako Aling Myrna, pero sana wala nang Aling,” Aleck said.
It is a controversial role since it involved having a lesbian relationship with Sheree Bautista’s character Jessa, while still fulfilling maternal duties in the dysfunctional Bartolome family.
“Nagkaroon na ako nyan (bisexual role) before at napagbintangan na akong ganyan. Ako naman okay lang sa akin. Mas gusto ko iba iba ‘yung naging role ko. Kasi mas challenging ‘yun eh. Tapos ang hirap nyan kung paano mo it-twist ‘yung pagiging mother mo, paging lover mo sa same sex,” Aleck stressed.
Not your typical “teleserye mom”
Portraying a role that is quite a departure from a typical teleserye mom, Aleck has nothing but praise for how it was conceptualized and developed.
“Sobrang happy kami na naging part ng KG (Kadenang Ginto), and ‘di rin namin alam na ganoon talaga mag-momove kasi ang ganda ng script, ‘yung directors namin ang galing din kung paano nila binuo ‘yun,” she said.
With Aleck’s memorable performances each day and viewers embracing her role, it is quite apparent that she is not doing it merely for work.
“Iba kasi talaga na trabaho ‘pag passion mo na ‘yung ginagawa mo. ‘Yun ang pinakaimportante. Mahirap ‘yung dahil pera lang. Oo kailangan mo ‘yun pero dapat nandoon ‘yung passion mo.”
And this she wants to pursue for a very long time.
“Ako mag-stay ako bukod sa passion ko hangga’t gusto ka pang mapanood. Gusto ka pa rin nila makatrabaho. Siyempre gusto mong tumanda ka na nasa industriya ka pa rin…Sana talaga, dumating kaming matandang matanda nasa showbiz pa rin kami, may work pa rin kami.”
Definitely, Aleck Bovick has not merely arrived to continue her colorful showbiz journey, but is likewise here to stay as a respected and acclaimed actress people will always admire and recognize.
