Family is certainly one of the biggest factors that can contribute to our whole being - from our personalities and decisions in life, to our treatment towards the people surrounding us. Family should also be the pillar we can hold onto whenever we feel weak, but, what if our pillar is not so strong that it chooses to break and give up on us? In the Maalaala Mo Kaya "Lipstick" episode,  we followed the story of Australia-based Filipina life coach Maria Pau, who fought in life much harder than she has ever thought.

Let’s get to know more about Maria and her difficult yet inspiring journey.

Being in a complete and happy family was what Maria, played by Barbie Imperial in the episode, hoped for while growing up. She was still young when her mother left them to take a risk and depart for Australia, in hopes of living a comfortable life. Maria’s mother Sally was never contented with their life in the country. She would most of the time have fights with her Maria’s father because of money. Instead of holding grudges against his wife, Maria’s dad never told her something ill about her mother. Maria’s father would always just tell her that her mother is only working abroad.

One day, Maria’s mom finally decided to get her and bring her to Australia. There Maria continued her studies and performed well in school. However, it seemed like her mother was not able to give much attention and was not able to show enough love to Maria during their stay in Australia. It would always look like she’s giving more time to her Australian boyfriend than her daughter. That is why Maria felt like she wasn’t valued as much by her mom and so she thought she found a family in her friends. These so-called “friends” would then introduce her to vices like alcohol drinking and smoking.

Because of this, Maria’s mom seemed like she’s given up on her daughter and even kicked her out of their house in Australia. Despite Maria begging her to accept her again, she still insisted that she should just go back to the Philippines. However, Maria did not want it. She wanted to stay in Australia, so she did everything to live by herself. She decided to enter the world of prostitution to earn money and provide for her own needs. Here she was introduced to partying and illegal drugs that made her life revolve around it. She was with many boys a lot of times in the past, and all of them did nothing but hurt Maria and do ill on her. During those times, she felt she was important to those guys, but they all just used her for their selfish reasons.

Maria looked like she lost all the hope she had in life because of all the trauma she had. When one of he friends saw her and knew about her situation, she was brought to a health institution and there she was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. Her friend also helped to heal spiritually. Eventually, she learned how to accept, forgive, and love herself wholly. She learned how to instill peace both in her mind and in her heart. From there, Maria had definitely gone a long way. She decided to take and earned her Master’s Degree in Public Health and Addiction Studies in order to understand more all that she has experienced in life. She then decided to go to her mom, thank her and ask for her forgiveness. In the end, Maria learned greatly from all the bad experiences that life has thrown upon her.
